In the 1950s, Illinois experienced a period of post-war economic prosperity, urban expansion, and social transformation, marked by the rise of suburban communities like District 509, industrial growth, and cultural shifts.

A painting displaying an orchestra rehearsing. — In 1950, the Elgin Community College Board of Education made the decision to create an orchestra program known as the Elgin Civic Symphony Orchestra. Interestingly, the most popular non-credit course at ECC in the past 75 years has been Choir, boasting a total enrollment of 3,065 students.

Renner Hall" — In 1950, Elgin Community College (ECC) became an American Association of Junior Colleges (AAJC) member and appointed Gilbert I. Renner as its dean. Renner, who had previously served at Elgin High School, brought his leadership to ECC, expanding the faculty and nurturing lasting friendships within the community. Renner's dedication earned him the admiration of both faculty and students. Additionally, in 1950, the population of Elgin was 43,534.

ECC introduced its initial non-credit course in Spring 1954, attracting two enrolled students. Before 1957, the sole credential offered by ECC was a "Certificate of Graduation." By the Fall of 2023, students were offered 540 distinct courses to choose from.

Associated Students, one of the six student clubs and organizations, sponsored the "Emeraude" prom at Villa Olivia Country Club.

The building was purchased for $41,902 in 1958 and later became known as Renner Hall. The Vets Club launched their inaugural project, a car wash on Chicago Street.
