Elgin Community College student Jamyra Thomas of Elgin, Ill., was born to be an athlete. She comes from a large family of athletes — including her parents, grandparents, and siblings — so sports have always been a big part of her life. As a member of the ECC women’s softball team, Thomas stands out as a great team player. While she’s known for being hard on herself, she chooses to go easy on her teammates.

Thomas is currently pursuing an associate of arts degree and plans to graduate next year. She always knew her dreams of attending college would come true. “I have always wanted to go to North Carolina or Grambling State in Louisiana, but I wasn’t sure how I could afford it,” Thomas said. “I felt so lucky when I got the scholarship to attend ECC. I felt so relieved. Knowing I could go to college for free and play the sport that I love!”

“I love it here,” she said. “Everyone is nice and helpful. I plan on graduating next year, but I may be back!” Thomas has big plans of becoming a corporate attorney someday, saying her favorite class right now is Civil Litigation. In addition to excelling on the softball field, Thomas stays active on campus as the Cultural and Political Chair for the Black Student Achievers Club (BSA).

Find out a little more about what this bright and outgoing student-athlete does in her free time below!

What is one hobby or activity you do outside of ECC?

Bowling! I love to bowl; my high score is around 215 or 220.

What is one place you dream of traveling to?

I really want to go to Japan so I can go live Mario Go Karting.

What is something that really makes your day?

Sleeping, softball practice on really nice days, and talking to my family and friends.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

The library. It is so quiet there and I can get so much done.

Would you like to give a shout-out to an ECC staff member or peer?

Definitely Melanie Schaefer! That is my girl. She helps me with so much. I know I can come to her with anything.
