Late last month, while the college was closed for winter recess and most employees were taking a well-deserved break, Manager of Receiving, Records Retention and Mail Operations Gema Macklin and her department held limited office hours to ensure Elgin Community College’s mail operations continued to run smoothly.
Macklin and her team are responsible for all of the mail and packages that the college receives and sends out…a feat that would even impress jolly old St. Nicholas. In addition, the mail operations team stores college records and bound materials; manages international and bulk mailings; and serves as the college’s experts on all state and federal postal regulations.
Always sorting mail with a smile, Macklin’s cheerfulness is contagious. Macklin is an ECC alumna, and worked as a student worker for the financial aid and scholarships office, the ECC Foundation, and the finance department before joining the college full-time in 2008.
Macklin loves to help people fulfill their dreams by recommending they come to ECC, or by connecting them to the right people at the college. She has also been part of developing and implementing policies on how ECC handles the business services side of the college, which in return makes ECC a leader within community colleges.
“I’m very proud of having great co-workers and having an awesome job,” Macklin said, with a smile.
We caught up with Macklin to learn more about her life and her work at ECC. Here is what she had to say.
