Deb Letizio wears many hats, including one made of cheese.
At ECC, Letizio wears the medical imaging program director hat, overseeing our radiography, magnetic resonance, computed tomography, and mammography programs. In addition to managing program admissions and teaching radiography courses, Letizio is responsible for keeping ECC in compliance with accreditation standards for the radiography and magnetic resonance programs. ECC's MR program is one of only 14 accredited programs in the country.
"My first meeting at ECC was with the Dean and Associate Dean regarding their need for a consultant to develop the radiography curriculum and prepare the program for initial accreditation," said Letizio. "I was impressed by their commitment to excellence and their willingness to provide the program with whatever was needed to make it a program of merit."
It was this first impression of ECC that solidified her desire to pursue the program director position, which she has held for 12 years.
We caught up with Letizio to learn more about her life, her work at ECC, and her cheese hat. Here is what she had to say.
What is your greatest accomplishment since you've been here?
My greatest accomplishment was the development of the four medical imaging programs. The curricula, as well as the faculty, are excellent, based on certification pass rates, job placement rates of our graduates, and feedback we get from employers.
If there was a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
What's on your "bucket list?"
I want to go to Italy! I never knew my paternal grandparents, who came to America from Italy. I want to visit and explore the area and culture where they lived.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love to garden, and I am a huge Green Bay Packers fan! I also love to dance – both ballroom and Latin.
Where was the best place you've traveled? Or where would you like to visit?
I am something of a beach bum, so most of our vacations involve the beach - Hawaii, St. Martin, St. John, or anywhere in the Caribbean.
What's one fact we should know about you?
My partner and I got married in a skybox on the 50-yard line at Lambeau Field.
What's something about your job that others should know?
Three of our four medical imaging programs have had 100% pass rates on certification exams since their inception.
What was your favorite class in school (could be elementary, high school or college)?
My favorite classes were anatomy and physiology in high school and curriculum development in college. An anthropology class I took in my undergraduate years also fascinated me.
What was your first job out of school?
I worked in a small radiology office. After graduating from a large teaching hospital, I was bored. I only stayed there a couple of months until I secured a position in a large hospital in Florida, which was much more interesting!
What quote best describes your philosophy?
I don't believe in doing anything halfway, so my philosophy is best reflected by a quote from Vince Lombardi (of course!). "The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor."
Complete this sentence: "I enjoy working at ECC because… "
I believe I am making a difference in my students' lives and contributing to the future of my profession and the quality of healthcare in our community.
