Emily Kies

Senior Director of Emergency Management Emily Kies helps ECC prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. In addition to plans that reduce risk to lives, Kies helps develop strategies that allow critical business services to continue during interruptions to the campus' normal routines and rhythms.

Since joining ECC in 2018, Kies has met continuously with departments and representatives across the college to develop a culture of preparedness and resiliency. "My goal is to develop competencies in each individual so they feel confident in their ability and the college's ability to respond to something that may significantly impact ECC and cause a disruption," she said.

We caught up with Kies to learn more about her life and her work at ECC. Here is what she had to say.

What is your greatest accomplishment since you've been here?

I've been able to check some big tasks off my list, but for me it's the people I've met and the solid working relationships I've established. I was able to secure faculty and support staff representation on the advisory committee to my department, which was a big win. I also developed a strategic plan for the department, which keeps the goals front and center.

What's something about your job that others should know?

I am watching the weather all the time! I love meeting different departments and gaining a fuller understanding of how I can help each facet of the college be better prepared and more resilient.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work (i.e. hobbies/interests)?

I'm an avid equestrian, and I have a horse named Flowerbomb. I also love to run and ski with my daughter.

Where was the best place you've traveled to? Or, where would you like to visit?

I was able to go to Paris two years ago with my daughter. I would love to get to New Zealand with my husband, and I would love to see Italy.

What's on your "bucket list?"

Everything! I would love to compete at the World Equestrian Center.

What was your favorite class in school?

Does gym count? I was that kid who actually tried. I also loved biology.

Talk about your first ECC experience.

I actually attended a nursing program overview here years ago. I was trying to decide between nursing and emergency management.

What was your first job out of school?

I worked for the Red Cross.

What would be your "theme song?"

"Overcomer" by Mandisa

What quote best describes your philosophy?

"Pay it forward."

What would you do if you were ECC president for a day?

Have a BBQ with a giant slip and slide!

Complete this sentence: "I enjoy working at ECC because..."

I love being part of an organization that truly values preparedness and places a priority on developing a more resilient community. We are all in this together, and the people here embody that mentality.
