Michelle Knox has planted herself firmly as an administrative assistant providing clerical and administrative support for ECC’s health professions division office. However, she might be better known to people in the do-it-yourself social media realm as the monogram planter lady.

Along with her husband Ryan, Knox built a new planter in the shape of a letter “K” for the front of their home. This monogrammed planter became the darling of social media as the picture has been viewed, shared or pinned over 1 million times! The Knox family was also the star of a Menards commercial as they filmed a 90-second time-lapse video of building the monogram planter. The entrepreneurial show Shark Tank even called them though they did not make it to the on-air finals.

We caught up with Knox to learn more about her life and her work at ECC. Here is what she had to say:

Tell us about your first ECC experience?

My first experience was being a student at ECC back in 2002. A few months later, I also accepted a part-time job on campus, so ECC felt like home to me for many years.

What is your greatest accomplishment since you’ve been here?

Still knowing almost everyone’s extension by heart even though I’m no longer working at the switchboard.

What’s on your “bucket list?”

Meet Jimmy Fallon and attend a taping of the Tonight Show. I haven’t missed an episode and think he’s the greatest.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy watching my daughter play softball, long walks through every aisle at Target, and all things home décor and interior design. My husband and I love going out to eat. Plus, I hate cooking.

Where was the best place you’ve traveled? Or where would you like to visit?

I loved San Diego. Temperatures in the mid 70’s and sunny year-round is where I long to be.

What’s something about your job that others should know?

I cannot handle an inbox full of emails, so I either respond immediately or put them in folders to follow-up on later. I also am a big advocate for smiley faces and exclamation points in emails because life doesn’t need to be so serious all the time!!! J (See what I did there?)

What would be your “theme song?”

“Fix You” by Coldplay.

What was your favorite class in school (could be elementary, high school, or college)?

Psychology.

What was your first job out of school?

I was a physician advise assistant for a managed healthcare company in Elgin.

What quote best describes your philosophy?

“Take the sourest lemon that life has to offer and turn it into something resembling lemonade.”

Complete this sentence: “I enjoy working at ECC because…“

I love the people!
