Jennifer McClure's heart may bleed Cubbie Blue, but since 2006, it's also been Spartan Blue. And just like her Cubs, who rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series in 2016, McClure, managing director of enrollment services, has dug deep to find winning solutions for ECC students and employees.
As managing director of enrollment services, McClure has helped improve students' ability to register online for classes and access information electronically while maintaining a personal connection. She also has strived to better understand the needs of the departments and offices she assists by serving on various committees. She also has worked with faculty to understand their perspective on the registration process and its effect on their classes.
In 2013 McClure helped the women's basketball team take their midterms while they were playing in the ΝJCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. McClure, who attended the team's games that entire season, worked with the faculty of the players' classes. Doing so allowed her to create a study hall period each day the team was at the tournament and to serve as proctor for the midterm exams that players had to take during that time.
We caught up with McClure and asked her some questions about herself and her work at ECC. Here are her answers.
In your words, what do you do at ECC?
I provide leadership and support to the enrollment services team: admissions, registration, records, First Stop and testing services to ensure they have the resources to provide excellent service to our students, faculty and staff. In addition, I work collaboratively with marketing, student financial services, dual credit, academic divisions and my student services colleagues to influence enrollment campaigns and assist with implementation of initiatives to help students succeed.
What is your greatest accomplishment since you've been here?
I have had the privilege of being involved in many great work teams, but the one that impacted the most students was when I was the registrar working with IT to ensure our students were able to fully utilize our online registration system. We went from 15 percent usage to 85 percent of students registering online and eliminated the line down the hall and around the corner!
What would you do if you were ECC president for a day?
I would encourage faculty, staff, and administrators to swap jobs or shadow for a day and then provide an opportunity to listen to one another. Spending time walking in someone else's shoes would be enlightening and would provide insight into what others are experiencing on campus.
If there was a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
What's on your "bucket list?"
Travel to New Zealand. I'd also like to live abroad someday. Also, I only have three U.S. states left to visit (Oregon, Alaska and North Dakota).
What's one fact we should know about you?
I must keep score at baseball games and yes, I did keep score at home during the World Series. Go Cubs!
What's something about your job that others should know?
Enrollment services work touches all aspects of the college from academics, to marketing, to student financial services and alumni. Continuing to build connections to strengthen our messaging and operations to help students succeed is at the heart of what I do every day.
What was your favorite class in school?
Social studies/history and Spanish. The teachers made all the difference! What was your first job out of school? I was a temp at Sears headquarters in Hoffman Estates.
