Coronavirus (COVID-19)

For all ECC's updates and information regarding COVID-19, visit elgin.edu/emergencymanagement.

As information concerning the coronavirus continues to evolve, we feel it is important to keep you informed of the steps the college is taking and your role in keeping our campus healthy.

The Elgin Community College Emergency Management Department works closely with the Kane County Health Department (KCHD) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to monitor and address health concerns that could impact our campus community. Most recently, the college has been closely tracking the COVID-19 virus (previously named coronavirus).

While this continues to be a concern for public health officials, stringent measures were put into place to reduce the impact of this situation, including federal travel advisories to specific countries. All ECC college programs are adhering to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, including travel advisories and any recommended personal safety measures.

If you travel to a country under a Level 3 advisory or above, you may not be allowed to return to the campus for the 14-day quarantine period.

During spring break, the college will be taking extra precautionary measures by deep cleaning all bathrooms, floors, and surfaces, in addition to maintaining daily cleaning protocols. The college is making available disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and tissues for employee and student use.

We want to once again encourage all members of the ECC community to take precautions to prevent the spread of any virus-borne illnesses like the flu. As with any cold/flu virus, coughing, sneezing, and touching surfaces then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes are the most common ways infections are spread. Health officials recommend the following procedures:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer of 60% or more alcohol if soap and water are not readily available,
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and
  • avoid close contact with people who are sick.

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, contact your medical provider.
