ECC’s Building H, home of the Elgin Community College Arts Center, will have a fresh new look in fall of 2019 after a summer of renovations. The updates to the building will arrive just in time for the Arts Center’s 25th anniversary season.
"The big win for the people of this region is that a superb live performance facility will get even better. Patrons always rave about our spacious lobby, plentiful bathrooms, and the acoustics, seating, and comfort of our live performance space," said Steve Duchrow, senior director of performing arts. "We know our loyal patrons will enjoy the new comfortable seats, the new look, and the technological upgrades that will save water and energy in our facilities."
ECC’s Building H, formerly called the Visual and Performing Arts Center, opened in January of 1994. During the last 25 years, there have been no significant updates to the building.
Some of the work being completed this summer includes a lobby renovation and new lobby furniture, remodeled restrooms, and the installation of energy efficient hallway lighting. Upgrades to the 662-seat Blizzard Theatre include new seating and carpeting, remodeling of the dressing room complex, and safety upgrades to the theatre’s auditorium lighting and mechanical rigging system.
Arts Center Renovation Closing Schedule
More than 30,000 guests visit the Arts Center annually in addition to a full roster of students attending classes daily. Renovations begin Monday, May 20, though theatre events remain as scheduled through Sunday, June 16.
Most offices and classes in the building will be relocated for the summer. Classes were relocated prior to summer registration so students are encouraged to consult their course registration information for specific class locations. Buildings G and J will not be accessible from Building H starting Monday, May 20 for the duration of the renovation.
For events scheduled through Sunday, June 16 in the Arts Center’s Blizzard and SecondSpace theatres, visitors can gain admittance through the building’s main entrance on Chipman Circle. There are no performances scheduled in the Arts Center’s theatres from June 17 through September 26.
The Arts Center Box Office will remain in its current location in Building H through June 16. It will be closed on Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18. The box office will reopen in Building F, Room 100 on Wednesday, June 19. Performance tickets are always available for purchase online.
Building H is scheduled to reopen before the start of fall classes. The Arts Center will post renovation updates throughout the summer to their Facebook page at facebook.com/eccartscenter.
