With a sound that is part Vince Gill and part Van Morrison, Hal Ketchum possesses one of the purest voices in American music. Over his 30-year career, he’s penned 15 top-10 singles including “Small Town Saturday Night” and “Hearts Are Gonna Roll.” A member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1994, circumstances shifted for Ketchum in 2009. Exhausted and battling multiple sclerosis, he packed up his guitars and headed home to Texas. Try as he might, he couldn’t stop songwriting, and the resulting music—a rallying cry that rejuvenated Ketchum both artistically and spiritually—ditches the country rulebook by incorporating folk, blues and soul.
