Testing Scores Summary

College readiness can be demonstrated through any one of the ways: 

1. Test Scores - ECC accepts ACT®, SAT®, PSAT, HiSet®, and GED test scores to satisfy minimum competency requirements. See the placement test scores chart for more information.
   
   
2. High School Transition Coursework - If you have successfully completed a high school transition math or English course with a C or better, you will be placed according to the Transition Course completed. Please submit official eighth-semester high school transcripts to the ECC Admissions Office.
   
   
3. High School GPA
   • Reading and Writing — If you have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on an unweighted 4.0 scale, based on six semesters of high school coursework, excluding summer, you can be placed into college-level English and any course with a developmental English or reading prerequisite. Please submit your official high school transcript to the ECC Admissions Office.
     
     
   • Math — If you have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on an unweighted 4.0 scale with successfully completing a grade of C or better in both semesters of the fourth year of math, you can be placed into certain college-level math courses. Please submit your official eighth-semester high school transcript to the ECC Admissions Office.
     
     
4. Early College Credit - Visit advanced testing for course credit awarded for AP, CLEP, and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.
   
   
5. Prior College Coursework - If you have taken college-level courses at another college/university, you may have satisfied minimum competency requirements. Additionally, if you have completed appropriate developmental math or English course at a regionally accredited college or university with a C or better, you may have satisfied minimum competency requirements. Please submit college transcripts to the ECC Admissions Office for review.
   
   
6. Completion of ECC Developmental coursework
   •  Reading – Grade of “C” or better in RDG 091 or LTC 099
   • Writing – Grade of “C” or better in ENG 098 or LTC 099
   • Math – Grade of “C” or better in MTH 095, MTH 098, or MTH 099
     
     
7. ECC Placement Test - If you do not meet any of the other measures listed above, or if your test scores have expired, you must take ECC’s placement tests in reading, writing, and/or math. If you meet the college-readiness math requirement and want to enroll in MTH 114, MTH 120, MTH 125, MTH 126, or MTH 190, you will need to take the ALEKS math placement assessment.

Note: Math placement scores are valid for two years from the date the test is taken. Reading and Writing scores are valid for five years from the test's date. All students must meet course prerequisites.

ECC has modified its placement scores and has adopted additional ways for you to demonstrate you are college-ready in reading, mathematics, and writing. Use the information below to determine if you need to take placement testing.

This chart covers the mathematics college readiness requirements at Elgin Community College. ECC strongly encourages students to begin their math sequence in their first semester. Please check the catalog for any additional college-readiness requirements that may also be required based on your program of study.

Choosing Your First Math Course at ECC

This chart is designed to help you and your ECC academic advisor determine your math course placement. There are many ways for you to demonstrate you are college-ready in mathematics, including high school GPA, ACT, SAT, PSAT, AP credit, and transfer credit scores - which are all outlined here. It’s also important that you understand the math sequence required for your particular program of study and/or transfer school, so we strongly recommend consulting with your academic advisor before registering.

Geometry Prerequisite

In addition to the criteria outlined in this chart, ECC’s geometry prerequisite is required for MTH 110 transfer level math courses and higher. The geometry prerequisite can be demonstrated by any of the following: 

1. Score of 22 or higher on ACT.
2. Score of 530 or higher on SAT or PSAT.
3. C or better in 2 semesters of high school geometry.
4. Score of 46 or higher on the ALEKS placement assessment.
5. C or better in MTH 097 or equivalent from another regionally accredited college.
6. Score of 56 or higher on the ALEKS geometry assessment.
7. C or better in a High School Transition to college algebra course.
8. C or better in a 4th year math course with unweighted high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale based on six semesters.

Do Math Placement Scores Expire?

ACT, SAT, PSAT and ALEKS test scores are valid for two years from the date the test was taken. Transitional math course eligibility expires 18 months after course completion.

If you have not enrolled in your first math course within two years after taking the ALEKS math placement assessment, you must take the ALEKS placement assessment again to enroll in a math course. Once you have enrolled in a math course at ECC, you will not be eligible to retake the placement assessment unless you earn a grade of A in your first math course taken at ECC. If you return to ECC after several years, you may continue the math sequence started or appeal to take the math placement assessment.

If you do not meet any of the above criteria, you must take the ALEKS placement assessment to determine your first math course at ECC.

ALEKS Math Placement Assessment Preparation

Preparing for your ALEKS math assessment is essential. You have several options:

• Check out the free trial before taking the assessment for the first time at aleks.com/free_trial. You will register as a student and choose the level of math you have studied in high school. You should complete the free ALEKS trial before you take the actual ALEKS placement for the first time.

ALEKS is designed to be taken multiple times in order to allow you to brush up and provide the best possible placement. You must wait at least 24 hours between attempts however and complete the required prep and learning modules between attempts. Learn more about ALEKS.

Accessing Your Math Placement Scores

You will receive your ALEKS score when you complete the assessment. Scores are also available on accessECC through the self-service app. The test summary is located within the academic planning section.
