Computer Science Majors

Associate in Science Pathway for Computer Science

This is a typical course schedule for a student planning to complete the AS degree within two years, then transfer and major in Computer Science. See your ECC Academic Advisor obtain specific requirements as course requirements vary by transfer institution.

Courses marked with * have additional prerequisites.

Fall Semester 1 - (16 Credit Hours)

  • ENG 101, English Composition I (3)
  • *1MTH 190, Calculus w/Analytical Geometry I (5)*
  • PHY 211, Engineering Physics I (5) (recommended)
  • Fine Arts/Humanities, Gen Ed (3) or CIS 121, Elective (4)

Spring Semester 2 - (16 Credit Hours)

  • ENG 102, English Composition II (3)
  • PHY 212, Engineering Physics II (5)
  • 1MTH 210, Calculus with Analytic Geometry II (5)
  • Behavioral/Social Science, Gen Ed (3)

Fall Semester 3 - (15 Credit Hours)

  • Behavioral/Social Science, Gen Ed (3)
  • Elective (3-6), Elective3 options include CIS 127, CIS 121, MTH 230, MTH 240, Foreign Language, AA Gen Eds, plus others, or Fine Arts/Humanities Gen Ed if not yet completed

1Math requirements differ dependent on degree requirements at your transfer institution.
2CIS 223 has MTH or CIS 123 prereq or consent of the instructor.
3Sample elective option- Electives should be chosen based on the requirements of your transfer institution

Communications, Fine Arts, Social Science, and Behavioral Science are ideal courses to enroll in during the Summer semester to lighten the credit course load during Spring and Fall semesters.

  • ECC & many transfer institutions require a Diversity and/or a Multicultural course as a graduation requirement. Courses that fulfill this requirement at ECC include options in Humanities, Fine Arts, Behavioral Science, and Social Science. See your academic advisor discuss this.
  • The Associate in Science & Associate in Engineering Science degrees does not include the entire IAI General Education Common Core (GECC) package. The AS & AES degrees allow for more math & science courses to be completed before transferring and better align with transfer institution 4-year plans.
  • This plan is a sample pathway; the only way to secure an accurate education plan for the school of your preference is to meet with an academic advisor in B120.
