Personal Training (Basic)

Program Description

Catalog Year: 2019

Health/fitness is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Employment in this area is expected to continue to expand in the next ten years and beyond. A degree in health and wellness management prepares graduates to sit for any nationally accredited certification exam required for personal trainers and/or group fitness instructors. The curriculum utilizes certification materials from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for personal training and the American Council on Exercise (ACE) for group fitness instructors. The program not only provides a solid knowledge base in anatomy, exercise science and kinesiology, but also offers many hands-on experiences designed to enhance each student's practical skills. Personal trainers work one-on-one or in small groups with their clients in a variety of settings including: health/fitness facilities, training studios, schools, athletic clubs, YMCA's, park districts, and clients' homes. Group fitness instructors design and lead safe, effective workouts accommodating the needs of larger groups of people. Students wanting to focus on improving their skills in this area may opt to obtain the Group Fitness Professional Vocational Specialist Certificate.
