Placement Test Appeal 4.404

Students may place into reading, writing, and math classes through the following options: appropriate score on the ACT, SAT prior to March 2016, SAT3 effective March 2016, AP credit, PARCC, Elgin Community College’s placement tests, High School Equivalency Tests, identified CLEP exams. A high school GPA is also used for placement.

The tests that can be appealed are ECC placement tests or the CLEP College Composition Modular Exam with Essay.

A student may retake each of Elgin Community College’s reading, math, or writing placement tests according to the reading, math, or writing departments’ recommendation before taking a class in those areas.  Once retesting has been exhausted according to the English, math, and reading departments’ policies and a student is still not satisfied with the placement results, the student may appeal.

Once enrolled in the sequence of English, math, or reading courses, a student cannot retest unless the required instructor approves the appeal.

A student may retake the CLEP exam three (3) months after each attempt. CLEP information is available on the web site.

The Appeal Form is available from the testing staff in Building B, Room B115.

All decisions on appeals will be made by the appropriate academic department designee in 15 business days or less from the submission date of the appeal. All decisions are final.
