The Elgin Community College Emergency Management Department works closely with the Kane County Health Department (KCHD) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to monitor and address health concerns that could impact our campus community. Most recently, the College has been closely tracking the COVID-19 virus (previously named Coronavirus).

To date, Illinois has 61 Persons Under Investigation (PUI) with two confirmed positive test results, and 59 negative results. While this continues to be a concern for public health officials, stringent measures were put into place to reduce the impact of this situation. ECC receives regular updates and maintains close contact with the KCHD to ensure the most up to date, accurate, and effective measures are put into place to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff. All college programs are adhering to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including travel bans and any recommended personal precautions.

As with any cold/flu virus, coughing, sneezing, and touching surfaces then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes are the most common ways infections are spread. The best prevention is to: wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
