Season Outlook

The Spartans will have five sophomores and eight freshmen on the ECC women's basketball team roster. The team will be led by sophomore co-captains Brittany Armato and Lauren Gabler, both starting guards on last year's team. The team will also return two other starters from the 2008-09 squad. Forwards Krissy Kunavich and Sophie Sterricker will play inside again this season for the Spartans. The other sophomore that will add depth to the post position is Kelly Tuggle.

The freshmen class will have a variety of players at the guard, forward and post positions for the 2009-10 season. Kayla Jackson will be a point guard and use her quickness and athletic ability to help the Spartans play up tempo this season. Rosie Garza and Kim Hotovy will add their hustle and athleticism to the 3 guard/forward position. The backcourt combination of sophomores and freshmen will allow the Spartans to fastbreak and look to attack from the 3 point line and the ability to drive and penetrate to the basket.

Hannah Griffin and Tracy Ferguson will both be impact players in the post position. Both players can rebound and score from 10-15 feet and in which will add to an inside/outside combination of post players that can score and rebound at both ends of the floor. Rounding out the roster will be Darlynn Sivilay who is also on the 2009 ECC women's cross country team this fall. She will play the 2/3 position. Joanne Jastrowski and Jessica Harris will join the basketball team after the volleyball season is over this fall. Joanne will play a 2 guard, and Jessica will be a forward and play the 4 position. She can rebound and score from 15 feet and in.

With a roster of 13 players, the team will concentrate on fundamentals, playing hard for 40 minutes, playing up tempo and stressing team chemistry and depth as strengths for the 2009-10 season. The Spartans will use the combination of sophomores and freshmen to contend for the conference championship and for a Region IV top 4 seed going into the Region IV playoffs. If we can stay healthy and play team basketball, it should be a fun and exciting season for the 2009-10 Elgin Community College Spartans.
