Elgin Community College baseball team head coach and alum Bill Angelo, ’91, achieved his 800th career win on April 9, sweeping Oakton Community College in a pair of games, the first of which locked in this latest milestone for Angelo.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” said Angelo, who has served as head coach for 27 years. “The milestones are nice because they allow you to reflect. I’m just the driver. It’s them who have been the reason for the success.”

“I’ve had great assistant coaches, great players, and quality kids who have gone on to do great things,” he said. “That’s what this milestone means to me.”

Angelo, also the athletic coordinator for the ECC Athletics Department, has coached 20 National Junior College Athletic Association NJCAA All-Americans, had five World Series appearances, and two Hall of Fame Inductions.

Angelo first came to the team as a player in 1989. He then returned to work as an assistant coach for three years while completing his bachelor’s degree at Benedictine University. He hung up his glove as a Spartan after finishing his degree to enter a career in sales. After two years in sales, Angelo found himself back on the field when the former athletic director offered him the head coach position. After working in sales for an additional year, he became a full-time employee at ECC, taking on the role of athletic coordinator during his second year of coaching.

“A goal of mine when I first took over was to be that resource [for my players and help them] navigate the early college years and make better decisions than I did,” Angelo said.

Twenty-seven years later, Angelo has no plans to leave.

“As long as it’s still fun, I’m going to keep doing it,” Angelo said. “I don’t shoot for these milestones, but I don’t see myself going anywhere else, and I look forward to the next, whatever that might be.”
