Scholarship honors professor’s daughter and benefits forensics team members

The-Andersons

Tim and Elizabeth Anderson

In April 2013, Whitney Sophia Anderson passed away less than a week after being born. Despite her short life, the daughter of Elgin Community College Communication Studies Associate Professor Tim Anderson and his wife, Elizabeth, is still making a difference in the world through a scholarship established in her memory.

First awarded in 2015, the Whitney Sophia Anderson Memorial Scholarship is open to members of the ECC Forensics Team with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who plan to transfer to a four-year institution.

Membership on the forensics team is extremely time intensive and involves rigorous preparation for tournaments year-round. Tim Anderson, knows that between college studies and competition commitments, it is nearly impossible for team members to commit to much else, such as a job.

Scholarships empower forensics team members to fully dedicate themselves to honing valuable communication skills that are transferable across multiple career paths and often lead to active community leadership and advocacy later.

Tim Anderson has been advising the team as director of forensics since 2009. “Some of my colleagues from both the Communication Studies and English departments founded the scholarship to honor Whitney's life and serve as a lasting tribute to the impact she had on me and my wife, Elizabeth.”

He added that through an outpouring of support from the ECC community, as well as friends and family, the scholarship fund started to grow considerably. Elizabeth Anderson's employer, Concord Marketing Solutions, matched employee contributions and then made its own sizeable donation, which elevated the scholarship to the endowed level.

“My favorite part of having this scholarship available is that I get to see firsthand the impact it has on students and their academic success,” Tim Anderson said. “Every time it is awarded, I get to see my daughter make a difference in a student's life and educational journey.”

Tim Anderson is grateful for everyone who has contributed to the scholarship in the past and encourages anyone who has been thinking about donating to the ECC Foundation to do so. “I would love for all of our team members to have the benefit of supportive scholarships like Whitney's,” he remarked.
