ECC resources helped culinary grad reach his goals

Michael Brotzman

I'm a 62-year-old U.S. Navy veteran of foreign wars who is graduating with high honors from Elgin Community College. I will earn an associate of science in restaurant management and an associate of science in culinary arts. In my second year of collegial pursuits I became a member of Phi Theta Kappa and made the President's List.

Four years ago I started at ECC with the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP) and through the relentless efforts of Anitra King, ECC veterans service coordinator, I entered the culinary arts and hospitality program. I am now an employed cook.

I would like to give a ringing endorsement to the ECC Foundation. The staff and generous donors who are responsible for creating, managing, and awarding these scholarships truly do this for selfless reasons.

The foundation scholarships are vital to students who live at their financial edge or near it. When you have less, you appreciate the money more. Sometimes that scholarship makes it possible to literally stay in college and complete your chosen degree. It feeds students, puts clothes on their backs, pays bills, you name it. All these things are necessary for success.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of them for the opportunity and support to change my stars.

Michael A. Brotzman
