Dr. David Sam ICCTA Award

Elgin Community College President David Sam, Ph.D., JD, LLM receiving the 2016 Gary W. Davis Ethical Leadership Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association

Elgin Community College President David Sam, Ph.D., JD, LLM, has been selected to receive the 2016 Gary W. Davis Ethical Leadership Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association. The award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the pursuit and support of ethical leadership and decision-making in their fields of work and volunteer service.

“I am humbled to be chosen as the recipient of this prestigious award,” said Sam. “I share this award with the ECC Board of Trustees; our faculty, students, staff and administrators; and the entire District 509 community. It is a testament to importance of values, ethics, and principles that are demonstrated in everything we do at ECC.”

Sam was nominated in February by the ECC Board of Trustees. He was selected as the 2016 recipient on March 12 by ICCTA's statewide Awards Committee, which is comprised of 12 community college trustees.

“He is so deserving of this award,” said Eleanor MacKinney, ECC board chairwoman. “He embodies all of our shared values. Additionally, he is a model of service, success, and high ethical standards.”

Established in 2004, the award recognizes the importance of fostering ethical values systems both within the Illinois community college system and in the larger communities they serve. Special consideration is given to those nominees whose ethical leadership has positively impacted community colleges or educational access in a local, national or global way.

“This is a special recognition and the committee only occasionally selects an individual for this leadership award,” said Michael Monaghan, ICCTA executive director.

Sam will receive the Gary W. Davis Ethical Leadership Award on June 3. The award is named after ICCTA's retired executive director, who is a nationally recognized leader in ethics education.
