Strong connections with students, colleagues guide Michel Román

Michel Román

Associate English Professor Michel Román

More than nine years ago, Associate English Professor Michel Román made the long trip from Chicago to Elgin Community College to find a job. It didn't take her long to make a quick first impression.

“I walked in to the job fair and right away met Tony Spahr (former chief human resources officer). He immediately took me to meet Dr. (Rick) Mao, the communications and behavioral science dean,” she said. “We spoke and he told me to go back home and apply online right away.”

That exchange didn't leave Román much time to admire the “large and beautiful” campus she visited. She was able to return for the full ECC experience when she interviewed for her position.

We spoke with Román to ask some questions about herself and ECC. Here's what she said.

In your words, what do you do at ECC?

I help students find their voice through learning to write properly. I am a motivator, a cheerleader, and friend to my students in order for them to navigate this world that has expectations of them.

What is your greatest accomplishment since you've been here?

Since I have been here, I have had my two sons and have created great relationships with many of my colleagues who have made me raise the bar in my personal and professional life. There are so many people who come and go and never speak a word to anyone, but the relationships formed here are everlasting. Shout out to the “Super Team!”

What would you do if you were ECC president for a day?

I really thought that something would pop in my head, but I guess part of the reason is that I love being an educator and never thought of another professional role.

If there was a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?

I would not like anyone who is currently famous. I would like a fresh new actress. This would be her breakthrough role.

What's on your “bucket list?”

I would love to travel and see the Seven Wonders of the World.

What's one fact we should know about you?

I am funny and love to laugh. Most people who know me can hear my distinct laugh and know it is me without seeing me.

What's something about your job that others should know?

Most educators know that it is not as easy as it looks, and people should appreciate their professors more.

What was your favorite class in school?

Creative writing.

What was your first job out of school?

I was a professor at Harold Washington College in Chicago.

Complete this sentence: “I enjoy working at ECC because … “

There are some very special people here who love to teach and learn and who will be there when you least expect it.
