Helping students succeed at ECC is why we exist

Andrea Andrada

ECC alumna Andrea Andrada

Student success can be defined by a variety of metrics. For me, student success is when a student comes to the college with a specific goal in mind and they either meet or exceed that goal and then move on to their next challenge.

It is our goal to help students reach their very best at Elgin Community College. That is why we have many student success infrastructures in place to help them along the way.

If you have read our 2015 Report to the Community then you are aware of the many accomplishments that our students have achieved.

Last year, our students were awarded the largest number of degrees and certificates in the history of the college! In fact, more than 2,500 degrees and certificates were awarded; 2,578 to be exact!

Moreover, 81 percent of our students are persisting from semester-to-semester and are transferring to four-year institutions at increasingly higher rates.

When I think of student success, many former students come to mind. However, one student still stands out. Her name is Andrea Andrada.

With an impressive list of accomplishments and awards, she is one of the most accomplished students in ECC history. She was an exclusive member of the First Team of the 2009 All-USA Community College Academic Team and the third ECC student to ever to achieve that level. The honor included being featured in USA Today and other national publications

In addition to that, she appeared live on CNN in 2009 speaking on behalf of ECC and other community colleges about why students make community colleges their first choice for education.

Ms. Andrada was the first ECC student to be named a New Century Scholar by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. This award is given to a student in each state that scores the highest in the application for the All-USA team. Ms. Andrada, also served as the student representative on the Community College District 509 Board of Trustees. While serving as trustee she received the Gigi Campbell Student Trustee Excellence Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA).

In 2009, she graduated from ECC with a 4.0 GPA and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she made the Dean's List and was a member of several honor societies. Today she is currently exploring her next path to academic success. I am confident that she will excel at whatever career she chooses.

I wanted to share this story with you because Ms. Andrada represents what we all can become with hard work, persistence and determination. We are proud that she is an ECC alumna! We will continue to follow her educational journey along with thousands of other accomplished alumni.

As was the case with Ms. Andrada, we can help improve your life through learning. Let us help you find your path. We are just as eager to share your story!
