Give the gift of education this season

Edy Molina

Edy Molina

The holidays are creeping around the corner and you are probably making your list and checking it twice.

Amid the hectic holiday gift-shopping for friends and family, have you considered donating to help students fulfill their educational dreams?

Did you know that 70 percent of ECC students depend on some form of financial assistance to continue their education?

Through the generosity of donors and supporters, the Elgin Community College Foundation provides assistance to more than 200 students each academic year.  The ECC Foundation has awarded 270 scholarships totaling nearly $205,000 for the current year.  Scholarship applications are submitted year-round and another influx of applications is expected soon, before the next semester gets fully underway.

Did you know that nearly one-third of ECC students are first in their families to attend college?

Edy Molina is one of those students.  Edy grew up in Ecuador where his parents struggled financially due to illiteracy, lack of education and addictions.  At age six Edy started shining shoes to help support his family and quickly fell victim to many of the same addictions as his father.

It took years for Edy to discover a path that would change the course of his life.  It wasn't easy, but he was willing to do whatever it took to be a positive role model for his daughter.

Today, Edy is working toward his associate's degree with plans to graduate soon.  While at ECC, Edy has received a variety of scholarships to help pay for his education.

“If it wasn't for ECC and the ECC Foundation, I would be burying my dreams somewhere in the land of failure and regret” he said.  “The scholarships mean a lot to me.  Most importantly, they mean hope.”

There are many stories like Edy's; students needing a little extra encouragement or just waiting for the right spark to ignite their futures.  Will you help the ECC Foundation provide more opportunities for students like Edy?
