‘Tis the season to fight hunger

Board Donating to the Spartan Food Pantry

The Board of Trustees donates to the Spartan Food Pantry

A recently released study, detailed in the Hungry to Learn report, found that one in five students went hungry while attending college and one in eight experience homelessness.

Of the more than 4,000 students surveyed at 10 community colleges across the nation, half of all community college students are struggling with food and/or housing insecurity.

At ECC, 28 percent of students are economically disadvantaged. In fact, there have been 669 student visits to ECC's Spartan Food Pantry since its inception in spring 2015.

“These are alarming statistics,” said Donna Redmer, EdD, chairwoman of the District 509 Board of Trustees. “I hope this study brings greater awareness to the importance of supporting our students above and beyond the classroom.”

The ECC Board of Trustees are among the many supporters of Spartan Food Pantry. In addition to monetary donations, trustees recently donated a cart of non-perishable food items.

”We wanted to do our part to help stock the pantry and to make sure there is enough food for our students when they return Jan. 19,” said Redmer.

Items that are needed most include proteins, such as soups, canned meats, and beans; toiletries; and ready-to-eat items such as fruit snacks, granola bars, and instant oatmeal, said Amybeth Maurer, director of orientation and student life.

“Giving inspires others to give, especially during this time of year,” said Maurer. “We have seen so many students donate their time to the pantry as well as food and monetary donations, which is an authentic demonstration of generosity, symbolic with the holiday season as well as ECC's values.“
