ECC students, employees gear up for ‘Make a Difference Week’

PB Jam

Students make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches during Make a Difference week's PB Jam.

Matt Duron, President of Elgin Community College's Student Government, says making a difference can take many different shapes.

“It can be feeding someone who cannot afford a meal or being a role model to someone who may not have the privilege of having one, he said”

Over 100 students and faculty members are taking time out of their busy schedules to volunteer for this year's Make a Difference Week at ECC.

The week-long event, from Oct. 19 to Oct. 22, closely aligns with USA Today's national 'Make a Difference day,' dedicated to giving back to the community through various on-campus volunteer and service activities.

Make a Difference Week has been hosted at ECC for over five years.  It consists of four events: a blood drive, PB Jam, volunteer fair, and a mini-service day.

This year, ECC is having the service event consist of making cards and small gifts for area cancer survivors, as well as work that needs to be done in preparation for Relay for Life. Participants put in time and effort to make this event a special experience not only to honor the cancer survivors, but also to honor the volunteers who help make this event possible.

“Making a difference means making impact.” says Katie Storey, student life coordinator and lead organizer for the event. “We can make a difference by serving those in need.”
