Get to know: Fred Vogt, Biology Instructor

Fred Vogt

Biology professor, Fred Vogt

Assistant Biology Professor Fred Vogt is a man of few words. But his actions and dedication to his students speak for themselves.

He had a hand at designing the new classrooms and greenhouse in Building M's east wing. Generally regarded by his students as a tough teacher, they don't regret taking his classes, according to ratemyprofessors.com.

Vogt, who also coordinates the biology program, has been at ECC since 2008. He sought out the college after finding out about the opportunity in a newspaper ad. A visit to the college solidified his answers.

“I was amazed with the clean, modern facilities.” He said. “I was very impressed with the both the pride and the professionalism of the faculty and staff.”

We caught up with Vogt to ask him a few questions about himself and ECC. Here are his answers.

In your words, what do you do at ECC?

I improve lives through education by teaching biology to all the burgeoning minds in ECC's district.

What is your greatest accomplishment since you've been here?

Assisting with the design of the new greenhouse and the supporting botany classroom and laboratory.

What would you do if you were ECC president for a day?

Host a hockey tournament on Lake Spartan (He's an avid fan of the Chicago Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres).

If there was a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?

Mike Myers or Sean William Scott.

What's on your “bucket list?”

Skydiving and going to Australia.

What's one fact we should know about you?

I demonstrate the wonders of the human digestive system by eating and drinking while doing a headstand during lectures. (Editor's note: We find that very impressive! We need to get a photo of that someday!)

What's something about your job that others should know?

I'm really good at explaining challenging concepts with drawings and sound effects.

What was your favorite class in school?

Fire Ecology in college because you had to set grassfires.

What was your first job out of school?

Nuclear Weapons Specialist for the U.S. Air Force.

Complete this sentence: “I enjoy working at ECC because … “

It's a little slice of heaven!
