Julian Hernandez, co-founder of ECC's Ballet Folklórico Huehuecoyotl (BFH), started as a part-time student taking night classes at ECC. Now, he is the president of the in-residence ensemble for Mexican folkloric dance and music, which teaches youth about Mexico's rich history of performing arts. Hernandez, '98, of Elgin, has two associate degrees, one in computer aided design (CAD) and another in applied science.

"Being a graduate from ECC helped me find some of my first jobs," Hernandez said. "I have seen ECC transform so much from my first year in 1985. I always feel at home here. The teachers and staff are very friendly. I couldn't ask for anything more as a student."

Along with his wife Cynthia, Hernandez founded BFH in 1996 as a non-profit organization designed to educate youth about Mexican culture and share the knowledge with a broader audience. In 2000, they formed a children's group, passing the vibrant Mexican heritage on to younger generations.

"I wouldn't be where I am today without Julian," said Cynthia. "He definitely is the visionary of BFH and is not afraid to reach for new heights. When I see what we've created and how far we've come, it still amazes me. Working with Julian, BFH, and ECC has been amazing. It was a blessing to have ECC take us in as one of their in-residence ensembles."

Through ECC's credibility and a unique partnership with the Performing Arts Department, the ballet has gained increased visibility and provided opportunities for many low-income students to begin a college career, many the first in their families to do so.
