ECC board approves three-year contract with support staff union

The Community College District 509 Board of Trustees approved a new three-year contract agreement with the Support Staff of Elgin Community College Association (SSECCA) at its August 12 meeting, completing negotiations that began in April. The unions members reviewed and ratified the agreement at meetings held on July 29 and 30. The two sides reached a tentative agreement on July 16. 

“We are pleased to have a new agreement with our support staff union,” says Donna Redmer, EdD, chair of the board of trustees. “Both teams put a lot of time and effort into negotiations to reach a fair agreement for both sides.”

Under the terms of the agreement, the approximately 400 members of SSECCA will receive a 3.65 percent increase in 2014, a 3.75 percent increase in 2015, and a 4.0 percent increase in 2016. Members in the lowest salary grades will receive an additional increase that will bring them to at least a minimum wage of $10.50 per hour.

“I am pleased we were able to raise the minimum wage for employees at ECC,” says President David Sam, PhD, JD, LLM. “Our support staff union members are a vital part of providing a world-class educational experience for our students.”

Other agreement details include a change in payment for health and dental insurance. SSSECCA members will take on a greater share of the expense of their own coverage. In the first year of the contract, they will pay 11 percent of the cost; the second year, 12 percent; and the third year, 13 percent. This is increased from the previous contract of 5 percent, 7.5 percent, and 10 percent respectively. In addition, the contribution rate for family coverage will increase to 21 percent in the second year and 22 percent in the third year, which is an increase from the current contribution rate of 20 percent. 

Over the three-year contract period, the increase in compensation will cost the college a total of $2.92 million. The colleges total budget for fiscal year 2014 is $137 million.

 The new contract will expire June 30, 2017.
