October 23, 2013 – Season Ends – Facing the College of Lake County in the Region IV Tournament qualifier round, ECC got outmatched 5-2. Jose Hurtado scored both of the Spartan goals with an assist on one of the goals from Jazael Medina.

“We competed all season with the best junior colleges in Region IV which is one of the strongest regions in the country for men’s soccer,” said head coach Dean Smith. “With over 75% of the squad being freshmen and using the experiences from this season, and with some good recruiting, we are confident that we can move forward and challenge for the conference and region next season.”

October 15, 2013 – Post Season Honors – Four Spartans were awarded post season honors at the recent Region IV men’s soccer coaches’ meeting. Defender Carlos Avina was named to the Region IV All-Region First Team and the Illinois Skyway Collegiate All-Conference First Team. Midfielder Fabian Gasca earned Region IV All-Region Second Team and ISCC All-Conference Second Team honors. Midfielder Juan D. Ramirez also was named to the Region IV All-Region Second Team, and defender Mitchell Tyton was named to the ISCC All-Conference Second Team.

October 15, 2013 – Region IV Tournament – The Spartans will open the Region IV Tournament playing against the College of Lake County on Wednesday, October 23 at Spartan Soccer Field. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m.  The teams last met in early September with Lake County getting a 6-2 win.

October 8, 2013 - Interested in Playing in 2014? - Head coach Dean Smith has put the word out that the Men’s Soccer team has openings on the 2014 squad. If you will be attending Elgin Community College full-time next fall and wish to try out for the team, please contact Coach Smith at dean.psc@gmail.com or (630)890-0815.  Scholarships for tuition at ECC for the 2014-15 academic year will be available.

October 1, 2013 – Spartans Weather the Storm – Facing Moraine Valley Community College, who is in second place in the Skyway Conference, ECC was up to the task and defeated the Cyclones 3-2.  Scoring goals for the Spartans were Michel Gomez with an assist from Juan Ramirez, an unassisted goal by Jazael Medina, and Juan Lopez with an assist from Jose Hurtado. ECC’s goalkeeper, Tony Benitez, made eight saves.

“After dominating the first half, we played with less intensity in the second half and found ourselves going down 2-1,” said head coach Dean Smith. “But again, we pushed men forward and found a way to win 3-2, with two goals in the last eight minutes.”

The Spartans will play their last conference game of the 2013 season on Tuesday, October 8 at Morton College in Cicero.

September 24, 2013 – Spartans and Pioneers End in Tie – The first 30 minutes of the game found both ECC and Prairie State College playing evenly, but when the Pioneers scored on a counter attack, the momentum shifted.  Prairie State scored two more goals in succession.

After finding themselves down 3-0, the Spartans were not only able to halt any further scoring on the Pioneers’ part, but also put together an offensive attack and scored three goals of its own.  Spartan Jazael Medina got things going by scoring on a penalty kick with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

“The goal gave us a massive lift, and we really put the pressure on Prairie State,” said ECC’s head coach Dean Smith.

Medina’s goal was followed by one from Jose Hurtado with an assist from Juan Ramirez. The tying goal was scored by Mitchell Tyton. Neither team was able to score through two overtimes, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Spartans will play their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday, October 1 against Moraine Valley Community College. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Field.

September 17, 2013 – Raiders Edge Spartans – Going into today’s game, both ECC and Oakton Community College were striving to get to the .500 mark in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference standings.  The Raiders got their wish with a 1-0 win over the Spartans.

“This is a game we should have picked up points from,” said ECC’s head coach Dean Smith. “We controlled possession, created chances, and had more territorial advantage. We needed more quality in the final third of the field.”

The Spartans hope to end their two game losing streak when they play Prairie State College on Tuesday, September 24 at the Spartan Soccer Field. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m.

September 12, 2013 – Spartans Handed Loss – After ECC seemingly had the game well under control with a 2-0 lead at the half, the College of DuPage shocked the Spartans with three goals in the second half to take a 3-2 win.

“After going up 2-0, we needed to keep the ball in the second half and use our wide players,” stated ECC head coach Dean Smith. “We did not do that, and therefore we gave COD the opportunity to mount attacks to which we conceded three goals in the final 16 minutes of the game. It was a harsh lesson, but one we have to learn from.”

The Spartans will travel to Des Plaines on Tuesday, September 17 to take on Oakton Community College. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m.

September 10, 2013 – Spartans Earn First Conference Win – Unable to get anything in the net in the first half, ECC put it together in the second half and defeated the College of Lake County 6-2. Scoring goals for the Spartans were Jazael Medina (2), Carlos Avina, Michel Gomez, Juan Lopez and Jose Hurtado. Assists were made by Fabian Gasca (2), Michel Gomez, Jessie Avina and Juan Ramirez.  Goalie Tony Benitez made 8 stops for ECC.

Stated head coach Dean Smith, “After dominating the first 30 minutes, we conceded a goal against the run of play. We then conceded another goal and found ourselves down 2-0 at half-time. We made a few changes and came out strong in the second half, scoring four goals in 13 minutes and killing the game off in the final 10 minutes with two more. It was a good performance, but we must take our chances when we are dominating games.”

Next on the schedule is a home game against the College of DuPage on Thursday, September 12 at 4:00 p.m.

September 5, 2013 – Chiefs Get the Win – Taking on nationally ranked Waubonsee Community College this afternoon, ECC gave it their best but came away with a 3-1 loss. Ismael Morales scored the lone goal for the Spartans.

“The boys played great in the second half after going two goals down in first half,” stated Spartan head coach Dean Smith. “We pulled it back to 2-1 and missed a PK. We pushed with real conviction to get back on level terms, but we couldn't put away our chances, and got caught on counter attack in the dying minutes.”

ECC will try to get back on the winning track when they compete against the College of Lake County in Grayslake on Tuesday, September 10 at 4:00 p.m.

September 3, 2013 – Spartans Quiet Bulldogs – On a beautiful afternoon for soccer, ECC defeated South Suburban College 2-0 at Spartan Field. The tandem of Juan Lopez and Jose Hurtado were responsible for the two goals the Spartans scored with each player also assisting the other. Goalkeeper Tony Benitez checked South Suburban's offensive threats making seven saves.

“We kept the ball well in the first half and played more counter-attack in the second half,” said head coach Dean Smith. “We showed maturity with our performance; when to take risks, when to be disciplined. This performance and the result will give us great confidence.”

The Spartans will face a tough challenge in their next game when they meet Waubonsee Community College at Sugar Grove on Thursday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. Waubonsee is ranked among the top 30 teams in the country in the NJCAA Division I polls.

August 27, 2013 – Spartans Lose Home Opener – Battling through the heat, McHenry County College spoiled ECC’s home opener with a 2-1 win over the Spartans. Juan Ramirez scored the lone goal for ECC with an assist from Ismael Morales.

“Our boys were on top in the first half, but fitness became an issue, and we struggled to keep the ball in the second half,” said head coach Dean Smith. “Addressing the fitness and training to keep the ball for longer periods will make a massive difference.”

The Spartans’ next game is at home on Tuesday, September 3 at 3:30 p.m. against South Suburban College.

August 5, 2013 - Goalkeeper Wanted - Head coach Dean Smith has put the word out that the Men’s Soccer team has an opening on the squad for a goalkeeper. October 27, 2012 – Spartans’ Season Comes to a Close –
ECC faced Oakton Community College today in Des Plaines in the quarterfinal round of the Region IV Tournament. The Raiders put to rest any thoughts the Spartans had of advancing in the Regionals by shutting them out 5-0. In their previous meeting, Oakton and ECC had played a very close game with the Raiders winning 1-0. This time around, the Spartans were missing several key players which had an impact on the end results.

October 24, 2012 – Spartans Advance in Regionals – Playing Moraine Valley Community College today at Palos Hills in the Region IV Finals Round 1, ECC came home with a well-earned 1-0 win. Josue Medina scored the Spartans’ lone goal with an assist from Rafael Herrera. Tony Benitez was solid in the net shutting out the Cyclones who had eight shots on goal.

“I am very happy for the players and the college to win a tough game against a good Moraine side,” said ECC head coach Dean Smith. “We started well and went a goal up through Josue Medina, and we created other chances before half time to be happy with our first half performance. Three minutes into the second half, Mauricio Arellano was sent off for contesting a foul called from the officials. We played the last 42 minutes with 10 men. The players knew how important this game was to progress to the quarterfinals and to get promoted to the Premiership. They showed more unbelievable desire and determination to keep Moraine out.”

With the victory, ECC advances to the Region IV quarterfinal round. They will travel to Des Plaines on Saturday, October 27 to take on Oakton Community College at 2:00 p.m. The Raiders and Spartans faced each other once this season, back in mid-September, with Oakton getting a 1-0 win.

October 22, 2012 – Spartans Advance in Regionals – It was close, but ECC edged out Daley College 2-1 today in Round Two of the Region IV Tournament qualifier. Josue Medina scored both goals for the Spartans with assists from Carlos Moreno and Jose Hurtado. Tony Benitez was in goal the whole game and made seven saves.

With the win, the Spartans now advance to Round One of the Region Tournament Finals. They will face Moraine Valley Community College on Wednesday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m. at Palos Hills. During the regular season ECC and Moraine Valley played to a 2-2 tie in overtime.

October 16, 2012 – Region IV Tournament – At last night’s Region IV coaches’ meeting the seeding was determined for the Region IV Tournament. To open the tournament ECC, the #2 seed, will face Daley College, the #7 seed, at the Spartan Soccer Field on Monday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m. The last time the two teams met, in early September, the Spartans defeated the Bulldogs 5-1.

Four ECC players also received good news from the coaches’ meeting. Midfielders Roberto Torres and Josue Medina were named to the Region IV All-Region Team, and Medina also was named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate All-Conference First Team. Medina, in 11 games, has tallied 17 goals and 5 assists which ranks him 8th among the NJCAA Division I individual scoring leaders. Receiving ISCC All-Conference Second Team honors were Mauricio Arellano and Carlos Moreno.

October 18, 2011 – With the seeding positions determined, the first round of the Region IV Tournament will begin on Wednesday, October 19. ECC, who is seeded at the #12 spot, will travel to Cicero to take on Morton College, the #5 seed, for a 3:00 p.m. game. In their lone matchup during the regular season, the Panthers defeated the Spartans 3-0.

Post season honors were awarded at last night’s ISCC/Region IV Men’s Soccer Coaches’ meeting, and ECC had a number of players as recipients. Forward Michael Berruquin was named to the Region IV All-Region Second Team and the Illinois Skyway Collegiate All-Conference First Team. Berruquin was the Spartans’ leading scorer with 7 goals and 1 assist. ISCC All-Conference Second Team honors were given to ECC forward Josue Medina, midfielder Pedro Perez, forward Julio Salas and forward Ishmeal Yemoh.
