May 27, 2014 - NJCAA National Tournament Results - Spartan Eric Burchfield just returned from the NJCAA Men’s Golf Division II National Tournament held at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana.  The four day tournament featured the top 128 community college DII golfers in the country.

Burchfield finished 70th with rounds of 74, 86, 82, and 76. During the regular season, Burchfield’s average was 78 so his tournament average of 80 wasn’t far off his pace.  This was accomplished despite the fact he had little chance to practice this spring because of poor weather conditions.

October 12, 2013 – Region IV Tournament Results – Competing in the Region IV Tournament held at the PrairieView Golf Course this weekend, the Spartans finished sixth in a field of 11 teams. Black Hawk College dominated the tournament winning by a large margin over second place Carl Sandburg College.

ECC’s Eric Burchfield finished the three day event with scores of 77, 75 and 82. His 234 total, sixth best in the field of 54 golfers, earned him Region IV All-Region Team honors and a trip to the NJCAA National Championship. The Nationals are being held May 18-23, 2014 at the Indiana National Golf Course in Swan Lake Resort, Indiana.

Teammate Connor Williams completed the tournament with a 247 (83, 81, 83), Austin Dell finished with a 257 (82, 84, 91), Brendon Barclay a 262 (82, 90, 90) and Dylan Ganow totaled 271 (91, 94, 86).

September 23, 2013 – Spartans Close Out Conference Season – Playing on their home course, ECC went into today’s Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match hoping to close ground on the conference leaderboard.  The Highlands didn’t do the Spartans any favors, however, and the team finished fifth. This resulted in them placing fifth overall in the Skyway standings.

ECC’s Eric Burchfield had a solid round coming in with a 79. Teammate Brendon Barclay ended the day with an 80, followed by Connor Williams and Reed Tack who each shot an 82, Austin Dell’s 87 and Dylan Ganow’s 90.

Both Burchfield and Williams were named to the ISCC All-Conference Team. Burchfield finished the conference season averaging 76.8 strokes per round and Williams’ average was 79.8 per round.

The Spartans will finish out the regular season on Friday, October 4 at the PrairieView Classic which will be held at the PrairieView Golf Course in Byron.

May 25, 2013 – NJCAA National Results – Matt Allison and Ryan Pondel returned to Elgin today from the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Tournament. The week long tournament was held in Scottsboro, Alabama at the Goose Pond Colony Course. As stated on its web site, “The Goose Pond Colony Course is a George Cobb design that opened in 1971. With its natural layout and views of the Tennessee River from every hole, the course has received many accolades over the past few years. Voted ‘most fun course to play in north Alabama’ in 1995 and 1996 by the Dixie Section of the PGA, the course is listed in Golf Digest Places to Play with 4 stars 2008/2009.”

Pondel shot rounds of 78, 82, 76 and 80 which placed him 91st in a field of 122 golfers. His teammate, Allison, opened the first two days of competition with rounds of 74 but then fell back in the pack (104th) with scores of 88 and 87.

The team from South Mountain Community College (Arizona) won the tournament shooting 13 under par, well ahead of second place team, Walters State Community College (Tennessee) which was 19 over par. David Keenan from Parkland College (Illinois) took the individual title going 8 under par.

October 6, 2012 – Region IV Tournament Results – The Spartans came through with flying colors at the Region IV Tournament held on October 4-6 at PrairieView Golf Course in Byron. Despite the cold playing conditions, the team placed third (952), just one stroke behind second place finisher Carl Sandburg College (951). Black Hawk College took first with their 916 total.

ECC’s results for the tournament were highlighted by Ryan Pondel who had rounds of 73, 77 and 74 which placed him in a tie for medalist with Black Hawk’s Cody Bender. On the second hole of the playoff between Pondel and Bender, Pondel lipped a putt for a bogey while Bender was able to par and gain the medalist title.

Matt Allison shot an 81 in the first day of competition, but really picked up his game the following two days coming in with a 75 and a 74.

Anthony Cardelli opened the first round with a 78, hit a few bumps in the second day shooting an 82, and then came back nicely with a 74.

Brent Wilkening rounded out the scoring for the Spartans with a three day total of 264.

While not placing first, the results of their outstanding individual performances over the weekend earned Pondel, Allison and Cardelli berths in the NJCAA National Tournament and Region IV All-Region honors. The Nationals will be held May 19-24, 2013 at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Alabama.

September 24, 2012 – Spartans Close Out Conference Season – ECC saved its best for last placing first in its final Skyway Conference match of the season. The win gave the Spartans fourth place in the conference standings, one point behind third place finisher Moraine Valley Community College.

Playing on a tough Shepherd’s Crook Golf Course in Zion, ECC’s Matt Allison was the medalist of the match shooting a 77. Ryan Pondel came in with an 80 followed by Anthony Cardelli (85) and Brent Wilkening (86).

Based on their solid performances this season, Pondel, Cardelli and Allison each were named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate All-Conference First Team.

The Spartans will next compete at the PrairieView Classic in Byron on September 28, using it as a tune-up for the upcoming Region IV Tournament.
