November 14, 2009 - NJCAA Nationals - Kyle Kopinksi and Kip Lichtenberg both said, at the beginning of the season, that they were going to make it to Nationals and run with the best in the nation. That chance came at the regional meet, and they came above and beyond and earned their way to a national meet. They ran down in Peoria this past weekend for the NJCAA Division I Men’s Cross Country championships. They finally made it to their goal. It was up to them what they did with this opportunity. The women raced before the men, and when it came down for the men’s race, I was just as nervous for Kyle and Kip as I was for the women’s race. Kyle and Kip worked all season to get to where they were just seconds before the race started. Seeing them toe the line with the best in the nation made me extremely proud of them and all the hard work they put in, and I knew they deserved to be here. More»
Season Outlook
The men's team consists of four great, enthusiastic, hard working, and fun gentlemen. Leading the way for the Spartans is Kyle Kopinski, a graduate from Jacobs High School. Not only will he be leading the guys in the races, he will also be leading in example, as he is the captain of the team. A returning Spartan fom two years ago, is Kip Lichtenberg. He will help lead the men with his experience. All the other runners are new to the 8K distance. I look to Kip to help them make the transition from 5K to 8K. Rounding out the Spartan team are Mike Ziebell and Angel Ornelas. These two gentlemen are fairly new to the running scene. From what I've seen so far though, it seems like they have been running their entire life. All of these men are already meeting my expectations in practice. When I get a fifth runner, this team will be a tough bunch to beat. We will be giving our conference a run for their money, so keep an eye out for the blue and white jerseys.
