Spartans Bring Home Championship

After a 19 year wait, the Spartans are once again the Illinois Skyway Conference Champions, sharing the title with Moraine Valley.  The Spartans entered the last 3 games of the conference season a game back but went on the road to Oakton, defeated College of Lake County at home, and then clinched a share of the title on the road at Waubonsee.  All 3 victories were by double digits.

Captain Brett Rau stressed that winning the conference has been the goal since day 1 and a lot of work went in to getting there.

Rau finished the season as the Spartans’ leading scorer averaging just over 15 points a game.  “Brett had a special season and was consistent all year long,” said head coach Reed Nosbisch.  “Brett was by far the most improved player here during his 2 seasons.  He is leaving a completely different player than when he walked through that door for the first time.”

During the clinching game against Waubonsee the Spartans leaned on someone other than Rau.  Sophomore transfer AJ Washington scored 27 points including 3 three-pointers in a 2 minute stretch that would put the game away.

Washington assured Coach Nosbisch that there was no way they were this close and not grab the title.  It was a total team effort.

The Spartans finished the regular season with a final record of 20-10 overall and 10-4 in conference.  It is the second straight season that the Spartans have won 20 games.  They are only 1 of 3 teams in Region 4 division 2 to have accomplished that feat over the last 2 seasons (17 total teams).

“This team is a special group, including the 7 sophomores, namely Ryne Lundy (South Elgin High), Jacob Siewert (Streamwood), AJ Washington (St. Charles East), Chris Mahoney (Crystal Lake South), Dalton Shaner (Eastland), Max Escamilla (Morristown), and Brett Rau (Burlington).  The freshmen included: Juwan Stewart (Larkin), Jamal Jackson (Australia), Jake Clodi (St. Charles East), Connor Boesch (Huntley), Jordan Anderson (Bartlett), and Stephan Moyer (Geneva). Everyone contributed throughout the season.

Coach Nosbisch also credited his assistants Pat Barnhart, Corey Rau, and Tarnell Davis for their dedication and hard work, and in the end everyone was rewarded.

Brett Rau was named 1st team all-conference, 1st team all-region, and Illinois Skyway Conference player of the year as well as being nominated for All-American awards.  AJ Washington was named 1st team all-conference, 1st team all-region, as well as being nominated for All-American.  Dalton Shaner was named 2nd team all-conference and Coach Nosbisch was named Illinois Skyway Conference Coach of the Year.

“The players ultimately sacrificed a lot to get this championship,” said Nosbisch. “I couldn’t be more proud of these athletes and everything they have done to represent this school.” Academically, the team also achieved an admirable cumulative GPA of 2.854 in the fall, 2015 semester.

The Spartans return a strong nucleus for next season to make another run at a conference title.  “We have the pieces and the goal is to maintain the level of consistency that this year’s team had.”
