The exhibit “Collateral Damage: The Human Face of War” addresses the physical, psychological and social effects that war has had on soldiers, their families and the civilians caught in the line of fire.

Each of the show’s four award-winning documentary photographers speaks to these unintended consequences. Vincent Cianni’s series, “Gays in the Military: How America Thanked Me” scrutinizes the efficacy of post-traumatic stress syndrome, civil rights abuse and the impact each individual soldier’s discharge has on their careers and emotional well-being. Samantha Appleton’s “Bedrooms of the Fallen” portrays the effects the loss of a loved one has upon families and friends. “Self-immolation in Afghanistan: A Cry for Help” by Stephanie Sinclair describes how a society’s social structure creates catastrophic repercussions. Ashley Gilbertson’s “Men with War” examines how each individual copes with their male identity in the face of war.
