John Duffy, MSEd
John Duffy of Elgin is the most senior ECC trustee having served longer than any trustee in the history of District 509. The retired administrator and teacher at Larkin High School, Elgin, has served on the board since 1975 and been elected to chair the group seven times.
During this time, Mr. Duffy has also served community colleges nationally. He was elected twice to the Board of Directors, Association of Community College Trustees, and appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Colleges. In addition, he served for eight years on the ACCT/AACC Joint Commission on Federal Relations and chaired that commission in 1988 and 1989. In 1991, Mr. Duffy was honored by ACCT as the Outstanding Trustee for the Central Region.
In 2002, the ACCT board again honored Mr. Duffy with the Central Region Trustee Leadership Award. He also received the Illinois Community College Trustee Association's (ICCTA) Trustee of the Year Award the same year. Currently, Mr. Duffy is the ECC board's secretary and representative to the ICCTA.
At the state level, Mr. Duffy has been ECC’s representative or alternate to the state’s organization throughout his years as a trustee. In addition to numerous committee assignments, he has chaired their Federal Relations Committee seven times and served on the executive committee nine times. Mr. Duffy received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Loras College in Dubuque, IA, and a Master of Science degree in education from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. He and his wife Anne are the parents of four children.
